UoE Research DataStore

The University of Edinburgh (UoE) Research DataStore is one element of the implementation of the University's Research Data Management Policy.  It aims to provide a substantial amount (500GB per user) of resilient, backed up, network storage to researchers (HR defined research active staff and research students) across the University.

Its objective is to "To provide a globally accessible cross platform file store with sufficient capacity to satisfy the majority of researcher use cases".   In its current form, the mechanisms outlined below describe how to connect to users' individual allocations.

Sharing data can be achieved by a process of creating research groupings, which is also described.

Methods for accessing the DataStore from Managed machines

DataSync

  • This is a new service that provides a DropBox like file hosting service for staff and PGRs.  See DataSync on the IS web Pages
  • This service allows you to synchronise your mobile or offsite devices with a portion of your DataStore.  Be aware that depending on what you are synchronising, you may need to ensure that your mobile / offsite devices are appropriately secure and encrypted

Windows

  • Map a Network Drive (click Start -> Computer -> Map Network Drive)
  • Folder: \\csce.datastore.ed.ac.uk\csce\geos\users\UUN  - where UUN is your username
Make sure that 'Reconnect at logon' is ticked
    Press Finish

Linux

  • cd  /exports/csce/datastore/geos/users/UUN - where UUN is your username

Mac OSX

  • Switch to the Finder (e.g. click on your desktop).
  • From the "Go" menu choose "Connect to Server".
  • You will want to connect to, for example, smb://csce.datastore.ed.ac.uk/csce/geos/users/UUN  - where UUN is your username
  • The password you use is your AD password, ie the password you would use to log onto a managed Windows PC

Methods for accessing the DataStore from unmanaged machines

You will need to follow the instructions to resolve the security permissions associated with non managed machines.  These are as follows:

Windows

  • Map a Network Drive to:
  • Folder: \\csce.datastore.ed.ac.uk\csce\geos\users\UUN  - where UUN is your username
Make sure that 'Reconnect at logon' is ticked
  • Tick 'Connect using different Credentials', This will prompt you for
Username:ED\UUN          - where UUN is your username
Password:xxxxx            - Your University Windows PC logon password
    Press Finish

Linux

Mac OSX

Donating some of your allocation to a research grouping

The Research DataStore allows for the possibility of pooling storage for research collaborations.  Researchers can choose to donate some of their storage allocation to a predefined research grouping, which will allow them to share data and storage with other members of the grouping.  At present, University policy is that a user's total donations should NOT exceed half their total allocation, ie 250GB.  No groupings are pre-defined, anyone wishing to set up a grouping need to follow the procedure outlined below.
  • The PI or nominated person for the grouping should contact ithelp@geos.ed.ac.uk with
    • a preferred group name ( no spaces or punctuation)
    • the nominated data owner( normally the PI)
    • the members requiring access to the grouping ( this may be different from the users donating some of their allocation - should they have one)

  • The process of donation is on a purely voluntary basis and so every member of a grouping wishing to donate part of their allocation must volunteer their allocation by sending a message to ithelp@geos.ed.ac.uk identifying
    • their username(UUN)
    • The grouping they wish to donate to and
    • The amount of storage they wish to donate.
The School IT Team will then arrange for the creation of the group and the subsequent reallocation of storage resources with Information Services (IS).  Once that is complete, the nominated data owner will be notified that the group share is available.  They, and all members of the research grouping, can then connect in the same manner as detailed above in Methods for accessing the DataStore, substituting  groups\GROUP_NAME (or groups/GROUP_NAME) for users\UUN (or users/UUN) in the path to the filespace. e.g.:
  • \\csce.datastore.ed.ac.uk\csce\geos\groups\GROUP_NAME
    (Windows)
  • /exports/csce/datastore/geos/groups/GROUP_NAME
    (Linux)
  • smb://csce.datastore.ed.ac.uk/csce/geos/groups/GROUP_NAME
    (MacOS)
**It is now possible to donate up to 250Gb of your allocation to one or more of a number of pre-defined research groupings
You can do this by accessing this link:  ECDF Storage Manager 2.0 See the schematic below for instructions
