Periodic assessments of teaching standards and quality within Universities are carried out by The Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education to "safeguard the public interest in sound standards of higher education qualifications, and to encourage continuous improvement in the management of the quality of higher education". Please vist The QAA for further details.
Every five years University subject areas are assessed for their quality of output by national panels with international representation. RAE results are used by government to prioritise research spending. Please visit HERO for full information.
Our fundamental mission is the advancement and dissemination of knowledge and understanding of the Earth's surface, interior and atmospheric processes, and their interactions with human environments.
We aim to provide an outstanding intellectual environment informed by feedback from research and a well-found physical environment with particular emphasis on computing and laboratory facilities, and provision for fieldwork.
We provide a range of degree programmes in Ecological Science, Environmental Science, Geography, Geology, Geophysics and Meteorology suited to National needs and individual aspirations, including provision of one or two Semester courses for students from abroad.
High ratings in successive Teaching Quality Assessment exercises have concluded that we do a pretty good job!
We consistently invest in highly motivated Academic staff and high quality Research Facilities. Our research is organised through flexible Research Groups of staff with common interests, with opportunities for Research Fellowships.
There are opportunities to join our research teams through PhD, MPhil and MSc by Research studentships. All of the taught MSc and many of the Undergraduate degree programmes also have a Research Project element.
